What markup is allowed in Wordpress.com?

Wordpress.com is different from a regular Wordpress site housed on a private server.  Wordpress.com is actually a custom multiuser Wordpress implementation that shares server resources and databases across the thousands of Wordpress.com sites.  Part of the benefits of this is near 100% uptime for your site no matter what kind of crazy traffic you suddenly start getting.  Also, you can rest assured that you site will always be up to date with the latest Wordpress software and security.

Part of this security requires limiting what can be done in the database that houses all of the content for your site.  What this means for you as a user is that you can't use javascript, flash, embeds, or iframes.  At least you can't directly use them.  The good news is that Wordpress.com has made accommodations for the most popular ways of using these elements.

For example, YouTube provides users with an "Embed" option for every video.  This allows you to put the video on your own site.  However, this embed code uses the iframe tag and so it is not allowed on Wordpress.com.

Wordpress.com knows that many users want to share YouTube videos and so they help you by providing several ways to sidestep the limitations.  Check out this article in the Wordpress.com support pages for more about embedding YouTube video.

I already mentioned that iframes are not allowed, but there are many other HTML tags that are not allowed by Wordpress.com.  Below is a list of some of the more popular tags that they do allow.  I've included a brief description and a link to W3schools for each tag.  W3schools is a great place to read more about HTML and even play with the code a little before trying it out on your own.  Be sure to click the green "try it yourself" button to play around with the code.

address - works well as a footer provide contact information

 

a - allows you to make links to other webages

 

i - italic text

b - bold text

blockquote - indent a paragraph to indicate a quote

 

br - line break will stop the flow of text and start again on the next line and can also be used to add spaces between paragraphs

 

del - designate a part of text as having been deleted

 

ins - designate a part of text as having been inserted

 

div - apply text styles to a division of text

 

font - define font, size, and color

 

h1 - create headers of different sizes h2 h3

hr - create a horizontal line

 

img - insert an image that is already online somewhere

 

li - create a list

ol

ul

 

p - define text as a paragraph

 

q - add quotation marks to text

 

strike - shows text with a line through it

Back to the Bush

After a busy summer, Heidi and I are back in the Bush. We arrived back to Stebbins last Friday and were happy to be home. When we stepped off the plane I noticed this huge pile of boxes on the runway. I immediately thought that it was a load of boxes from new teachers who were moving up, but upon closer examination I saw that it was supplies for victims of the Hooper Bay fire . These supplies will go a long way in helping families weather the wake of this disaster. After living out of suitcases all summer, we were happy to be in our own place, with our own bed, surrounded by all of our own stuff. Just two days later though we found ourselves back on a plane on a flight to Unalakleet to attend training from Dr. Langford . Today we found time after our training to do some geocaching. Alaska Principals' Conference 2015

SESSION TITLE: Implementing an RTI Schedule at the Middle School Level using Social Media, Board Presentations, Apps, and More Passionate principals work hard to change the status quo in our schools.  Our presentation will help principals see how to make change in a difficult environment with many obstacles present.  Principals will learn strategies for preparing the school community for change in a positive way so that when the change comes, they will be ready to get on board.  Principals will also learn about the Pickr app, which allows students to pick their own tutorials and make ad-hoc groups in a quick and efficient manner. Heidi's Debut Post

I am entering the world of blogging, and feeling so techy. I decided that my debut post would be about my guspuk . Throughout the long, cold winter I have been finding hobbies to keep myself busy (we don't have TV). I borrowed a guspuk from one of our cooks, drew a pattern off of it, bought fabric at our store, and started sewing. A guspuk is a light weight parka worn by both men and women. A woman's has a little skirt, a front pocket, and a hood. Below: Here I am in the process of sewing. It took me about 2 weeks to finish. Below: The final product. I enjoyed sewing so much that I've started on a second guspuk. If you would like one, send me fabric and rik rak. It's still winter here, and I'm still looking for ways to keep busy.
